Random Stat: Big Men Who Drain Threes E-mail

Channing Frye Three (Getty Images)

Watching Andrea Bargnani and Dirk Nowitzki going at it tonight got me thinking about the trend for great big men shooters in the NBA of late. So with a bit of help from the excellent HoopData, I pulled out the top big men three point shooters so far in 2009-10. To be on this list, you had to be primarily a power forward or centre and you had to be 6'10" or over.

These stats are threes made per 40 minutes and for all players with greater than 10mpg.

Player Name 3PM Height
Ryan Anderson 3.7 6'10"
Matt Bonner 3.4 6'10"
Channing Frye 3.1 6'11"
Rashard Lewis 3.0 6'10"
Rasheed Wallace 2.6 6'11"
Troy Murphy 2.4 6'11"
Tim Thomas 2.3 6'10"
Ersan Ilyasova 2.1 6'10"
Andrea Bargnani 1.9 7'0"

Oh, and Dirk? Well he only hits 0.7 threes per 40 min, but he takes an impressive amount from 16-23 feet for a scorer of his magnitude and height. Dirk attempts 42% of his total shots from 16-23 feet and a further 23% from 10-15 feet. Scoring consistently over 25ppg from that range is hard work.

Memo comes in at 1.6 threes made per 40 min, compared to 1.5 last season and 1.9 in the two previous seasons. I'm a bit surprised too though -- thought he hit more than that.

Dirk > Bargnani

Bargnani> the rest of them

no question about it

I'm sure that Wallace and, maybe, Lewis are both stronger than "Il Mago", BY NOW... He's a different player, but at Frye level, another time, by now... Altought the last couple of weeks, like one year ago, puts everything just in perspective, for us.. Bargnani could really become arguably better then all of them... Defense, is the key.. Aside of all, is body is simply a rock! He doesn't suffer harmstring, altought the stance! He plays heavy minutes, following a qualifying round with his NT, and is just starting to perform his usually best basketball stint!

il Mago still has a little way to go, that is for sure. As a shooter he is brilliant, but as mentioned above, he just needs to work on his overall game. Defensively, it'd be nice to see him use his height to his advantage a little more and/or find ways to move his feet to get himself in position better. He certainly has a bright future, as do gli altri Italiani, Belinelli and il Gallo!

Averaging is misleading ... because it wipes out the quality of the 3s. You must analyze the number of games in which the players got 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. 3s to determine the quality of the scoring.

Bargnani gets ~2 threes per game, but what if he gets one in half his games and 3 in the other half. What does this tell you???

By providing the average number you are suggesting that these players are consistent in their production, but they may be streaky scorers. Get the point??

@Observant

You are right to an extent. However at some point, the number of threes you're making is the most important factor. The stat above tells us how many threes you're contributing to a team's success per 40min. Over the course of an entire season, that average per 40min tells a big story.
