Has EA Sports stopped making NCAA Basketball? E-mail
Written by mookie

According to this kotaku article, the answer might be an unfortunate "yes." You know what Dick Vitale would say to that.

"NCAA Basketball is not listed among key sports titles due for release in Electronic Arts' coming fiscal year, fueling speculation that the poor-selling franchise has been discontinued.

I emailed EA Sports for comment; it hadn't responded as of publication time. NCAA Basketball has long been rumored for the chopping block, with poor sales only part of the picture. The title draws nowhere near the kind of post-release support of other EA Sports retail releases."

College BBall video games have been dying for awhile. I still love College Hoops 2k8 and hope that 2k sports makes another one.

I think what EA should do is to incorporate their college game into their NBA game. This years College game was based off the NBA Live engine anyways. I think if they took what they had and brought the teams together they could score huge numbers. 2k should do it if EA won't. It would be a great way to have a Become a Pro mode and start out in High School. Get scholarship offers. Play college. Probably go one and done if were John Wall caliber and then go to the NBA without changing a disc.

Part of the problem with college basketball games is finding new ways to improve the game. It's not like you have new players names to throw in there each year and you can't spend the money if the game isn't selling great.

It would be a cool way to have a coach mode and then you could yield offers and jump to the pros as a coach.

Great idea, Gene. I love the idea of integrating the NCAA and NBA games. It adds so much more realism. As you say, that is effectively what is happening now with the feature to bring your player up through the ranks to the pros, so why not take it that extra step and put the NCAA framework in place. It really can't be that much extra work for them given that it uses the same engine.

You mention the coach function. I really wish that they had more coach functions in games. It's something I remember from a couple of games many, many years ago and I really enjoyed them. Sometimes you don't want to do all of the playing, but just sit back and draw up the plays and make the front office decisions. Doing that at an NCAA level too would be great! And trying to progress from being an NCAA assistant through the D-League and the NBA ranks would be even more fun!

Soccer has some great "Manager" games -- basketball needs the same.
